What is the most common type of skin cancer?

The most common type of skin cancer is basal cell carcinoma. This type arises from the basal cells in the epidermis, the outer layer of the skin. Basal cell carcinoma is notable for its slow growth and local invasiveness, but it rarely metastasizes to distant sites, making it highly treatable when caught early.

Various factors contribute to the prevalence of basal cell carcinoma, including prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun or tanning beds, which damages the skin and increases the risk of skin cancer.
